UC Announces Fall Healthcare Courses

This fall, University College will offer university courses in health care leading to degrees or certificates in holistic health, medical lab technology, nursing, and more. The courses will be taught online or delivered to the center via interactive television and teleconference from the campuses of the University of Maine System.

The U.S. economy has lost millions of jobs since the beginning of the year, yet, during that time, health care has added more than 100,000 jobs, according to a recent US payroll report. Career counselors and researchers say the trend is driven by the aging of the nation's baby-boomers, who are beginning to need more medical treatment and related care. Many of the nation's medical professionals also are reaching retirement age, leaving openings for newcomers to fill. By 2030, nearly 72 million Americans--almost one in five people--will be age 65 or older, according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

“Qualified professionals will always be in demand to work in laboratories, in clinics, and as nurses,” said Chris LeGore,Director of Distance Education for the UMS. “We are fortunate to be able to offer excellent quality courses and programs in communities statewide.”

Registration for the 2009 fall semester, which begins August 31, is open and ongoing.
