ACE (Access College Early)  Program

For high school juniors or seniors who haven't made up their minds about college, the ACE (Access College Early) program can help. The program allows students who haven't planned for college to enroll in college courses for both high school and college credit. The experience should help students to make informed choices about their lives and futures.

The ACE program is sponsored by the Mitchell Institute. A number of high schools across Maine have received Mitchell Institute grants that provide an opportunity for selected high school juniors and seniors to take free college level courses on university campuses and University College centers during the 2006-2007 academic year.

If you have a high school grade point average below a "B," but think you might enjoy the challenge of taking a college course with older students, please speak to your guidance counselor. Guidance counselors can call 1-800-868-7000 to learn more about course locations near your high school.

Students are selected by guidance counselors on the basis of the following factors:

  • first in their family to attend college,
  • have uncertain plans for the future,
  • have not considered college an option for financial reasons,
  • are not enrolled in courses traditionally used to prepare for college,
  • are not thriving in the traditional high school setting,
  • face other barriers to college.

Please note that the ACE program is funded for the 2006-2007 academic year. Interested students should contact their guidance office as soon as possible to begin the process of enrollment.
