Aspirations Program
Like ACE, the Aspirations program is open to junior or senior high school students for both high school and college credit. Unlike ACE, students eligible for the Aspirations program must have a minimum high school grade point average of at least a 3.0, or the equivalent of a “B” average. A high school student who does not meet the eligibility requirements may participate if he or she has received a recommendation from the student’s school administration.
Under the program, the Maine Department of Education will pay 50% of the in-state university tuition for no more than one course per university semester or two courses (6 credit hours) per year. The university will waive the other 50% of tuition.
If a students wishes to enroll in more than two courses in a year, the university may waive 50% of tuition for up to two additional courses (one more course each semester or two more per year). Since the Maine Department of Education will pay half tuition for only two courses per year, the student would be responsible for 50% of the tuition for these two additional courses. Each university has its own policy regarding these tuition waivers, so students should check with the admissions office of the university offering the course.
The program is open to students taking interactive television (ITV), videoconference, and traditional, on-site courses at a University College center. Online and developmental (remedial) courses are not part of this program. An eligible high school student may take courses in the university's fall, spring or summer semesters.
