A History of Midcoast Senior College

In 1999, a small group met with David Baty, former director of University College in Bath, for the purpose of establishing an opportunity for life long learning in the midcoast area.

Prior to this, the Portland based senior college had been created with the vision of Rabbi Sky. Inspired by this, many individuals in the greater Bath/Brunswick area felt a strong interest in offering a similar opportunity to seniors who wished to continue to learn.

Nancy Wheeler and Jack Thompson spearheaded this endeavor with David Baty's assistance, and a letter went out to the public. Due to an overwhelming response, an open house was held, and the following spring, March of 2000, six courses were offered.

Today, an executive board of fifteen governs Midcoast Senior College, which is hosted by the University College at Bath/Brunswick. Currently we offer thirteen 8-week courses during the spring and fall semesters, with volunteer faculty and an enrollment of 200. Courses range from Russian and American studies, fiction and poetry, and architecture, to painting and drawing, computer skills, and music. And much more!

Students are aged 55 and above. There are no exams, no grades, and no credit hours given.
