Associate of Arts in Social Services
The University of Maine at Augusta
The University of Maine at Augusta’s Associate of Arts in Social Services is available at University College Centers* and sites statewide. The program provides you with specialized education and training if you wish to work in the field of Social Services. This field encompasses organized activities, intervention methods and counseling for persons with physical, mental or social disabilities. The program offers courses that examine the resources, issues and policies of the social services system. An important aspect, "Career Experience," includes field placement in a social services agency. The diversity of agencies serving clients in Maine provides a wide range of choices for field placement, which allows you to practice your acquired knowledge and skills and obtain valuable on-the-job training.
The program offers opportunities to develop the skills required for you to work as a paraprofessional or as a program coordinator in a convalescent, geriatric, rehabilitation, substance abuse treatment, mental retardation or mental health facility. You could find employment in group homes, nursing homes, hospitals, and comprehensive mental health centers, as well as in public and private community service agencies.
The University of Maine at Augusta offers several transfer agreements that permit graduates of the Social Services program to transfer with junior standing into a bachelor’s degree program, including transfer to The University of Maine at Augusta’s Public Administration Program or Mental Health & Human Services Program.
