Maine's Public Universities - University of Maine System

Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology
University of Maine at Augusta & University of Maine at Presque Isle

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program of Maine is a collaborative effort of the University of Maine at Augusta and the University of Maine at Presque Isle in cooperation with several hospitals that serve as clinical affiliates. All MLT courses will be available via videoconferencing at each of the seven University of Maine System campuses, most University College Centers,* University College of Bangor, the Hutchinson Center in Belfast, and Lewiston-Auburn College. Each MLT course will require a maximum of three intensive weekend laboratories or review sessions to be held at UMA and UMPI each semester. All general education courses are available at UC Centers* and sites statewide. Students will be responsible for taking required science courses at a University campus or UC Center*, depending upon course availability.

This two-year program leads to an Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology and eligibility to take the nationally-accredited MLT certification examinations administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA). The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Current clinical affiliates include: The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, Cary Medical Center in Caribou, Houlton Regional Hospital, and MaineGeneral Medical Center in both Augusta and Waterville. Others will be added as the program evolves.

Medical Laboratory Technologists perform routine tests in the medical laboratory for use in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. MLTs perform tests in the four major departments of the laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, and microbiology. Although most MLTs are employed in hospital laboratories, others work for physicians’ offices, independent laboratories, reference laboratories, research laboratories, state public health laboratories and federal government agencies. Placement rate for graduates seeking a position in the field is 100% because of the large number of unfilled openings. Students can also transfer into a baccalaureate degree program so that they may upgrade the certification to Medical Technologist (MT).

Admission requirements include high school biology and chemistry with laboratories, plus two years of college prep math (Algebra I and II).**The curriculum is listed on back of this flyer. For more information, contact one of the following MLT Program Co-Directors:
