Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene
University of Maine at Augusta
University of Maine at Augusta’s Bachelor of Science degree completion program in Dental Hygiene is available at a distance through University College Centers statewide. This professional education in an individualized program of study prepares dental hygienists for positions of responsibility in a variety of settings, including health care delivery, research education and public health. Advanced dental hygiene courses increase the depth of professional knowledge while selections in general studies give breadth to the student’s education.
Applicants for admission must hold an associate degree in dental hygiene from an institution accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association and be currently eligible for licensure. Class sizes are limited, so early application is encouraged.
Two of the three core courses are offered via two-way videoconferencing at eleven University College Centers statewide. DEH 449 Current Concepts in Dental Hygiene I and DEH 489 Current Concepts in Dental Hygiene II will be rotated regularly, fall and spring semesters. DEH 400 Dental Hygiene Practicum can be done in an approved setting in the student’s vicinity. The general education and other program requirements may be taken on-site or via videoconferencing at University College Centers, online at a time and place the student’s schedule allows, or via interactive television at Centers and sites.
All students enrolled in the program must achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50 and at least a grade of "C" in all courses applied toward degree credit to remain in the program. To be eligible for graduation, the student must successfully complete all requirements and have a minimum of 45-48 credit hours beyond the Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene, plus a grade point average of at least a 2.50.
