Bachelor of Science in Library & Information Services
The University of Maine at Augusta

The University of Maine at Augusta’s Bachelor of Science in Library & Information Services degree program is available via the Internet, videotape, and regionally accredited colleges. Well-trained library personnel are essential in order to keep pace with rapid developments in information technology. The program can prepare you for paraprofessional and technical assistant positions supporting the work of library and information services professionals. Graduates of the program can assist in all areas of library processing – acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, and user services. Employment is also possible in locations other than libraries – museums, law offices, newspaper/magazine establishments, public relations firms, and government agencies, for example.

When you enroll in the program, you begin a challenging adventure. The curriculum for the first two years will follow the Associate of Science in Library & Information Services degree program, except for the practicum, which is replaced with an additional elective. Beyond essential liberal arts requirements, you explore computer information systems, public service programming, reference and database searching, library technical processes, information technology and media, collection development, and information careers. In addition to the core group of library courses in the second two years of study, you will choose a subject area concentration, working with the advisor, to meet your specific career goals. You are encouraged to pursue your individual interests with specialty courses as electives. A research/internship is required.

The program makes exciting use of information technology to create a college experience that is remarkable in its flexibility and convenience. Core coursework, in the form of lectures on videotape and manuals containing weekly assignments, is available to you through the UMA Bookstore at the start of each course and completed at home; class discussions take place via e-mail and discussion boards. Non-library courses are delivered at local regionally accredited colleges or via interactive television. Requirements include residency of 45 credits of the University of Maine at Augusta LIB courses.

Admission requirements:
Successful completion of 30 credits from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 2.5 OR
1000 combined points on the SAT OR
If you do not meet either of the above requirements, you will be entered into the A.S. degree and after successful completion of 30 credits, you may transfer to the B.S. degree program.
