Child & Youth Care Practitioner Certificate
The University of
Maine at Augusta
UMA’s Child & Youth Care Practitioner Certificate program is available at University College locations and sites statewide. UMA in cooperation with the Maine Association of Group Care Providers offers a 30-credit-hour sequence of courses that will elevate the professional aspirations of persons who provide direct services to youth in group homes, residential treatment, shelters, juvenile corrections, foster care, early childhood education, and community outreach support programs. This program serves as the focal point for a statewide Child & Youth Care Certification model.
The aims of this program are to provide the student with foundational knowledge in the following five competencies:
1. Professionalism
2. Cultural & Human Diversity
3. Applied Human Development
4. Relationships and Communication
5. Developmental Practice Methods
The courses required for the certificate include (*To assure success, students should fulfill these prerequisite courses before the other requirements.):
HUSA 101 Introduction to Social Service Systems*
HUSA 212 Case Management
PSYA 100 Introduction to Psychology*
HUSA 221 Adolescent Mental Health
SOCA 101 Introduction to Sociology*
COMA 102 Interpersonal Communication*
HUSA 120 Child Mental Health
PSYA 308 Human Development
PSYA 232 Crisis Counseling
One of the following: PSYA 345 Problems & Interventions in Childhood, CRJA 277 Violence in the Family, HUSA 233 Sexual Abuse & Trauma, or SSCA 318 Adolescence, Substance Abuse & Criminality
All courses in this certificate program transfer into the A.S. in Human Services, the A.A. in Social Services, and the B.S. in Mental Health & Human Services. If students have two or more years of work experience, they may qualify for the assessment of prior learning (APL). Contact the Office of Testing at 621-3495 for more information about this process.

$5 non-refundable application fee
high school transcript or GED test scores
all official college transcripts
it is recommended that placement tests in reading and writing be taken
appropriate documentation of immunization history (if born after 1956)
