Graduate Certificate Program in Information Systems

The University of Maine

The primarily Web-based University of Maine Graduate Certificate Program in Information Systems focuses on the technical, managerial and policy issues associated with constructing and managing computer-based information systems for modern organizations. It also stresses the importance of the end user in resolving information system design and data processing problems. The objectives of the program are to meet the growing demand in society for high-level information system skills and provide a path for women and men from diverse fields to rapidly transition to information system career paths by providing them with foundation graduate level courses in information systems. This program is offered through a collaborative effort by faculty in the Department of Computer Science, Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering, and the Maine Business School. A full description of the Graduate Certificate program is available at: www.spatial.maine.edu/GradCertIS.htm.

Required Courses:
The Graduate Certificate in Information Systems requires completion of six of the following courses offered on the Web via live streaming video on a yearly basis:
BUA 664 Databases and Data Mining in Industry
BUA 661 Knowledge Management and Decision Support Systems
BUA 638 Model-based Decision Making
SIE 550 Engineering Databases and Information Systems
SIE 525 Information Systems Law and Policy
COS 420 Software Engineering or COS 545 Networking or SIE 556 Distributed Information Systems
These courses also constitute the required core courses for the Master of Science in Information Systems. Students who complete the six-course Graduate Certificate program may earn the M.S. by completing four additional courses. It is possible to complete the entire M.S. program online with careful selection of elective courses.

Admissions Requirements:
Minimum general prerequisites for admission to the Graduate Certificate program include the following courses (or comparable courses completed at other universities): MAT 126 Calculus I, MAT 215 or 232 Statistics, and COS 220 Introduction to Computer Science I (C++). Individual courses may have other prerequisites. Admission standards for the Graduate Certificate program are exactly the same as those for the Master of Science in Information Systems degree program. Therefore, application to the M.S. program is highly encouraged. However, prospective students may take up to two courses as a graduate non-degree student prior to formal admission to either the M.S. or Graduate Certificate program, provided specific course prerequisites have been met. Students with a GRE score less than 1500 or a GMAT score of less than 570 and an undergraduate grade point average less than 3.0 are discouraged from applying. Online application forms are available on the Web at: www.umaine.edu/graduate/onlineap.htm.
