The University of Maine at Augusta’s Certificate in Library & Information Services program is available totally at a distance. This 15-credit hour certificate program provides students with the practical skills for entry-level employment as support staff in libraries (academic, special, school, and public) working with professional librarians. It also offers persons with previously earned college-level coursework the knowledge to work as a paraprofessional in a library or information center setting.

The six courses (15 hours) for the certificate are:
LIB 100 Introduction to Libraries and Library Careers 2 credits
LIB 101 Library Public Services and Programming 3 credits
LIB 109 Information Literacy 1 credit
LIB 150 Basic Reference and Database Searching 3 credits
LIB 175 Library Technical Processes 3 credits
LIB 225 Library Information Technology and Media 3 credits
TOTAL HOURS 15 credits

The program makes exciting use of information technology to create a college experience that is remarkable in its flexibility and convenience. Asynchronous instruction is presented via videotape, e-mail, and the Internet. Courses are offered on a guaranteed basis. If your goal is to work as a library technician, this is the place to start.
