Certificate in Maine Studies
The University of Maine
The University of Maine’s Certificate in Maine Studies (CMS) is available at University College Centers* and sites statewide. The program offers students an opportunity to pursue a multidisciplinary study of Maine through courses in history, literature, women’s studies, sociology, economics, political science, geology, geography, and biology. The program recognizes the value of a multidisciplinary approach to understanding historical and contemporary issues such as developing Maine’s economy, protecting its environment, and appreciating the cultures of the state’s diverse population.
In recognition of the completion of 18 credit hours in courses offered through the Maine Studies program, the Division of Lifelong Learning will award the Certificate. The following courses may be applied to the CMS:

The Certificate in Maine Studies program may also include topic courses, cooperative education opportunities, independent study, field experience, special topics, reading courses, and interdisciplinary offerings. Some examples might include:

WST 201 Topics in Women’s Studies: Women and War – Oral History of Maine’s Women Veterans
Who should apply for the Certificate in Maine Studies? If you are an Education major who expects to teach in Maine’s public schools, you will find the CMS useful in preparing you to teach Maine Studies (required in the 4th and 8th grades). Also, if you plan to find a job in Maine in such fields as business, government or social services, you will benefit from a multidisciplinary understanding of Maine. The CMS will point potential employers to your increased interest and expertise in Maine issues. Finally, if you are interested in Maine generally, you will enjoy a greater appreciation for the state’s land and people, the history and culture, the flora and fauna.
