Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community Certificate

The University of Maine at Augusta’s Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community Certificate is available at University College Centers* and sites statewide. The certificate is awarded upon completion of a ten-course sequence in psychology and social services. The certificate is appropriate if you work in the mental health field and have direct-service experience in mental health but lack formal higher education, or if you wish to seek employment in the mental health field. You should contact the Muskie Center for Learning after completion of the program to obtain state certification.

The program, which will be taught via the statewide interactive television network, can be completed on a part-time basis over a two-year period or less. This program emphasizes a basic understanding of human behavior, mental health rehabilitation skills, and a foundation in the methods and values of psychosocial rehabilitation. It is particularly suitable if you wish to work toward an Associate or Bachelor’s degree. (To assure success, students should fulfill prerequisite courses before the requirements. Check full course descriptions in the course catalog for prerequisites.) The 30-credit hour certificate includes the following courses:

Community Mental Health Care
Case Management
Crisis Counseling
Psychosocial Rehabilitation
Mental Health and Aging
Sexual Abuse and Trauma
Group Process
Interviewing and Counseling
Social Problems
Chemical Dependency Counseling or Substance Abuse Counseling for Special Populations

All courses in this certificate can be applied to either the Associate of Arts in Social Services or the Bachelor of Science in Mental Health and Human Services degrees.

The following items will be needed as part of the application process:
$40 non-refundable application fee
high school transcript or GED test scores
all official college transcripts
it is recommended that placement tests in reading and writing be taken
appropriate documentation of immunization history (if born after 1956)
