Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Certificate
The University of Maine at Augusta
The University of Maine at Augusta’s Certificate Program in Substance Abuse Rehabilitation is available at University College Centers* and sites statewide. The program provides coursework relevant to the education requirements for licensure and certification. At present, an applicant for licensure must have a minimum of an associate degree in a substance abuse rehabilitation related field. The Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Certificate provides the necessary coursework for you if you are interested in becoming an alcohol and drug counselor. The certificate also provides chemical dependency education if you are working on a degree in a field other than substance abuse rehabilitation. (To assure success, students should fulfill prerequisite courses before the requirements. Check full course descriptions in the course catalog for prerequisites.) This 31-credit certificate consists of the following courses:
1. Chemical Dependency
2. Introduction to Social Service Systems
3. Case Management
4. Sexual Abuse & Trauma
5. Chemical Dependency Counseling
6. Crisis Counseling
7. Group Process
8. Substance Abuse Counseling for Special Populations

The State of Maine licensing law requires that in addition to the specialized coursework in the field, you must also complete 4,000 hours of work experience in a facility licensed by the State of Maine Office of Substance Abuse. Our certificate program only provides the education component; you must complete the 4,000 hours in addition to the coursework. For further information regarding the licensing requirements, contact the Professional and Financial Regulations Department of the State of Maine at 207-624-8603.
