Maine's Public Universities - University of Maine System

Certificate in Liberal Arts

The Certificate in Liberal Arts (Level I) is awarded when a student has completed at least one course in each of six core Liberal Arts subject areas: composition, mathematics, social and behavioral science, communication, humanities, and laboratory science. The specific courses (pdf) or (text) can be drawn from a selection offered by University of Maine System campuses at University College locations statewide.

You may complete the requirements for the Certificate in Liberal Arts (Level I) at your own pace, taking as little as a year, or several years to finish. The credits earned by taking courses for the Certificate fulfill general education requirements at any campus of the University of Maine System for a period of ten years, so you can fit your studies toward the Certificate conveniently into your work and family schedule.

Credit for courses you complete while working toward the Certificate can also be transferred to campuses of the Maine Community College System.
You may choose to have your Certificate awarded by any of the five participating University of Maine System campuses: University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine at Fort Kent, University of Maine at Machias, University of Maine at Presque Isle, and the University of Southern Maine.
