Master of Science in Computer Engineering

The University of Maine

The University of Maine Master of Science in Computer Engineering non-thesis option program is now available online. You can expect to complete the 30 semester hours of coursework for this degree within two or three years. In order for you to become a candidate for this degree, you must either have completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering or at least demonstrated its equivalent. Staff in the UM Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE 207-581-2223) can elaborate about this process.

Degree Requirements: A set of four core courses in Advanced Microprocessor Based Design (ECE 571), Microprogramming (ECE 573), Linear Systems Analysis (ECE 512), and Software Engineering (COS 520) are offered on a rotating basis. You are expected to complete at least three of these four courses. You must complete at least one graduate-level (500 or above) course in Computer Science. In addition to the core curriculum, you may enroll in other state-of-the-art courses offered by the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science graduate programs.

Normally no more than six credits of ECE or COS 400-level coursework will be acceptable for graduate credit. In addition, no more than one ECE 599 and two ECE 598 courses may be taken toward fulfilling the requirements. You may also choose to take courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and other disciplines that are consistent with your program goals. You must have a GPA of at least 3.0 for all courses taken as a graduate student.

After acceptance to the Graduate School, it is necessary for you to meet with the Graduate Coordinator of the ECE Department to discuss your proposed program of study. Call 581-2223 to schedule. Note that you can take two graduate courses as a non-degree student before being admitted to the Graduate School. These courses can then be applied to your degree program.
