Multimedia Quick Guide

Multimedia is the term we use to describe online video and audio segments, live video- and audio-streaming lectures, and animation. Some courses that use WebCT, FirstClass and Blackboard software include links to multimedia segments.

To play multimedia segments a broadband connection is required.

QuickTimeTM, RealPlayerTM and, Windows MediaTM Player are software plug-ins that work with your browser to display multimedia content. We recommend your Internet browser be Firefox 3.0 or later, or Internet Explorer 6 or later, for use in multi-media courses. Your computer should meet these minimum system requirements.

Before you can view an online video or audio segment, there are several steps you must take to ensure that the segment is playing at the best possible quality.

• Check if the appropriate software ("plug-in") is installed on your computer, and install it if necessary.
• Set the connection speed for the plug-in to match your internet connection speed.
• Check the volume settings on your computer.

Checking and Installing Plugins

Use the link at the bottom of this page to test your plug-ins. A check of the internet software installed on your computer will start automatically, and you will see the result.

If the appropriate plug-in is installed, a confirmation screen will open.
If the plug-in is not installed you will be directed to the appropriate download page for the required software.

After you confirm the appropriate software is installed, you will find instructions for checking the connection speed settings and adjusting the audio volume for your computer
