The American short story examined in terms of sources and form from its beginnings to the present. Emphasis will be on the development and achievements of the short story as a major American contribution to world literature. Prerequisite: ENG102W. CR 3


Eastern Maine Community College

EMS 123-32  Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (5/19 - 8/20)
Instructor:  Bob Peterson               T/Th 6:00 - 9:00 pm

Prepares ambulance and rescue personnel, police officers, and fire fighters to administer out-of-hospital emergency medical care. The laboratory component provides practice in patient assessment, airway management, CPR, automatic external defibrillation, oxygen delivery, PAST, dressings and hemorrhage control, splinting, spinal immobilization, childbirth, lifting and moving patients, and extrication. This course includes clinical experience in a hospital emergency department and/or ambulance service. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to sit for the State EMT-Basic Licensure Exams. (117 hours), Prerequisite: Reading Comprehension

Emphasizes rhetorical principles, accuracy of expression, organization, and longer essays in order to help students think logically and write clearly. In addition, students prepare a research paper and sit for a competency-based examination. A passing grade in this course or its equivalent is a graduation requirement of all degree candidates. (3 lec, 0 lab) Prerequisite: Accuplacer Score of > 8 on Writeplacer. CR 3

ENG 215-45  Business and Technical Writing            (6/22 - 8/7)

Gives students hands-on experience in writing for business and industry. Students will address a variety of writing situations by selecting appropriate methods of development, including letters and memoranda, informal and formal reports, technical instructions and a professional resume. In addition to written assignments, students will conduct a technical briefing at the conclusion of the course. (3 lec, 0 lab) Prerequisite: ENG 101

Introduces students who may possess a strong background in arithmetic to some basic principles of algebra in preparation for more advanced coursework.
