Maine's Public Universities - University of Maine System

Fall 08 and beyond: What you need to know before registering for courses

CHANGES TO THE WAY CREDITS WILL BE ACCEPTED

The distance learning courses you take from other campuses will now be treated as “transfer credit.” Because thiis is a big change for students who are used to mixing and matching courses at a distance, it's a smart idea to check with an advisor before enrolling. Here's why:

Make sure your courses count. Some UMS universities require that you complete the last 30 credit hours of your degree program through your home campus. Others are more flexible and will waive requirements with your advisor's approval. Regardless, before you enroll make sure that your university will “count” another university's course towards your senior residency requirement.

Watch that GPA. While the credit hours you have earned will be counted towards your degree program (with advisor approval), your grade will not be calculated into your overall GPA (which, depending upon your grade, could be either a positive or negative change!). Remember, it is University of Maine System policy that only those classes with grades of “C-“ or higher will be accepted in transfer.

Consult the matrix. Always check the course equivalency matrix to be sure that the distance course you have selected satisfies the requirement or category you are seeking to fulfill.

Cover all your courses. If you are a UMaine, UMFK, or UMM student, you must submit a signed form requesting that your financial aid cover the courses you take from another university. Link to these forms below:
