Master of Science in Adult Education
The University of Southern Maine
University of Southern Maine’s Master of Science in Adult Education program (42 credit hours) prepares educators for a variety of human resource development roles in all types of organizational and community settings. Originally established to meet the region’s need for trained public school administrators of adult education, today the adult education program prepares educators in school and non-school settings—higher education, hospitals, recreation agencies, businesses, and human service organizations. Students seeking to complete the master’s program from a distance can do so by selecting courses that are available online, via two-way audio and videoconferencing at each of the seven University of Maine System campuses, most University College Centers,* University College of Bangor, the Hutchinson Center in Belfast, and Lewiston-Auburn College, as well as via one-week summer intensives at the Gorham campus.
The University of Southern Maine’s College of Education and Human Development plans to offer one or two online courses each fall and spring semester, as well as on occasion using an alternating Saturday schedule (8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) via videoconferencing. During the course of the program, students may choose to complete other courses and electives through one-week summer intensive offerings on the Gorham campus. Typically, four or five one-week intensive courses are offered each summer. With a faculty advisor, students choose their courses and can select a focus for their program. Students will receive advising through a combination of email, telephone, and face-to-face (during the summer) communication with program faculty.
Experienced educators with a master’s degree may choose to pursue a post-master’s Certificate of Advanced Study in Adult Learning (30 credit hours). In this certificate program, accomplished practitioners hone their learning in the field of adult education through academic study and field-based projects. For further information about either offering, please contact the USM College of Education and Human Development listed below.
