Special Education Course Cluster: Teacher of Children with Disabilities (282)

Includes courses from University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK), University of Maine at Machias (UMM) and University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI), offered through The Northern-Downeast (NDEP) Pilot Project

This course cluster is designed for students who hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and plan to apply for the endorsement: Teacher of Children with Disabilities (282). The courses are also available to undergraduates interested in learning about individuals with disabilities. The universities that are part of the NDEP project offer a two-year rotation of a minimum of 24 credit hours of undergraduate professional coursework in special education leading to the Teacher of Children with Disabilities (282) endorsement.

Courses are offered at locations state-wide, delivered online and via interactive television. While course numbers are consistent for all three of the participating universities, course titles may vary (please see www.learn.maine.edu/ndep for a full listing). Courses include:

SED 320 Special Education Law
SED 325 Assessment in Special Education
SED 330 Mathematics and Special Education
SED 335 Program Planning and Curriculum Adaptation
SED 340 Communication and Collaboration in Special Education
SED 345 Behavior Strategies and Social Skill Development for Students w/ Disabilities
SED 355 Transitional Issues for Students with Disabilities
SED 362 Typical and Atypical Expressive and Receptive Language
SED 365 Instructional Methods in Special Education

Applicants for the Teacher of Children with Disabilities (282) Endorsement must:

  • Complete a minimum of 24 credit hours in special education

  • Pass Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in reading, writing and mathematics (Praxis I)

  • Pass content area, pedagogical knowledge and skills assessment (Praxis II - code #0353)

  • Complete 15 weeks of student teaching in the endorsement area. This requirement shall be waived upon completion of one full year of successful teaching under a targeted need certificate, conditional certificate, or transitional endorsement in this endorsement at the specified grade level.

  • Applicants for certification must also be fingerprinted.
