Library Services for UMS Faculty
Faculty members teaching over University College's interactive television
system, teaching asynchronous courses, or teaching at one of the University
College Centers of the University of Maine System have access to a
wide variety of information and library services. For more information
about these services, please call the Off-Campus Library Services
office at 1-800-339-7323 (Maine toll-free) or National toll-free 1-888-266-4950.
Course Design Assistance
Professional librarians are available to discuss and assist in the
design of assignments for distant students. In addition, the librarian
can consult in regard to the feasiblity of timelines for projects
involving library research and document delivery, as well as the availability
of resources. We also can discuss alternatives to the research paper
and other projects which have worked well for students at a distance.
Information Literacy Skills Instruction
Professional librarians from the Off-Campus Library Services office
are available to instruct students in how to find and use relevant
library materials via Mariner (the University System's digital library) or other access tools. Sessions may
be conducted either at a University College Center classroom or over
the ITV system.
In-class library instruction for distant students can be provided
in a variety of formats (e.g., a brief procedural demonstration to
an hour-long advanced research skills presentation). Please call
to make arrangements.
Copyright Services
Copyrighted materials that will be included in coursepacks must be copyright-cleared
and renewed for every semester that they are used. Off-Campus Library Services
provides clearance services for distance education faculty. Please submit requests ten weeks
prior to the start of the semester to allow ample time for clearance.
Contact Donna Bancroft with your
questions.
Broadcast Rights
Any videotapes, CDs, slides or other audiovisual materials that are
shown over the University College's Interactive Television System
need to be cleared for broadcast. Please submit these requests ten
weeks prior to the start of the semester to allow ample time for
the rights holders to respond. Contact Donna Bancroft with your questions.
Reserve Materials
The OCLS office can assist faculty with electronic reserves or distributing reserve materials to the University College Centers/sites. Every effort will be made to see that
these materials are easily available for student use. Materials must
be copyright-cleared and submitted four weeks prior to the
beginning of the semester. Please contact Donna Bancroft with your questions.
