APA (American Psychological Association) Publication Manual, 5th edition --

• If you need the look at the entire APA Manual, there are copies on reserve at the Katz Library in Augusta and at all of the University Centers / Sites.

Citation Guide --

• Citing Sources -- excellent website developed by Duke University Libraries. Gives sample citation formats for various style manuals and will assist you in putting your Works Cited list together.

Help with your library research --

• Library Research Guide -- a step-by-step guide for finding books in URSUS and articles in the University of Maine System's online Indexes and Databases. Available online on the Off-Campus Library Services homepage and also found in your syllabus.

Library Reserves --

• Sample Proposals and Research Papers -- student samples from previous semesters are on electronic reserve. You will need a password to access these. The password is given in your Blackboard site or you can call the Off-Campus office at 1-800-339-7323 (Maine only) or 1-888-266-4950 (National toll-free) for this information.

• Britannica Online -- To obtain background information on your topic, it is sometimes useful to look at an encyclopedia. The articles in the encyclopedia often give you ideas for terms to search with in the databases, definition of terms, statistics, maps, and general information. The bibliography, references, or works cited at the end of the article often gives clues for further reading. Some of the online encyclopedias also give selected web site links on the internet. select from the alphabetical list of databases. If you are accessing this resource via the internet off-campus, you will need your library barcode number to use as a login.

• URSUS -- Using URSUS, you can identify books and government documents within the University of Maine System libraries as well as the Bangor Public Library, the Maine State Library, and the Maine Law and Legislative Library. You can "Request" items with your University library card and have them sent to the campus, University Center, or ITV site where you are taking your classes or out-of-state for our non-resident students.

To renew your books borrowed from URSUS:  Renew online by viewing your record, calling Off-Campus Library Services, or leaving us an e-mail.

• MaineCat -- If you cannot find an item in URSUS, you can search MaineCat the catalogue of other libraries in Maine and order material with your University library card. The drop down menus allow you to have MaineCat books sent to a campus, University Center, or ITV site for pickup.

To find journal and magazine articles, newspaper articles, book reviews, and other current information, you will be using the Indexes and Databases. These databases cover varying date ranges and discipline areas. To find information about the coverage and date ranges of the database, click on the in front of the database name.

To access databases from home you will need to "Authenticate" into the University of Maine System. You will be prompted by this box once you select the database to search, simply enter your LAST name ONLY and your 14 digit library barcode number.

Academic Search Premier -- covers the areas of study: social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts and literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies. Date coverage varies according to the publication. Provides full-text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications.

PsycInfo -- Index to the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines, including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas. Coverage includes references and abstracts to over 1,300 journals in more than 20 languages, and to book chapters and books in the English language. From 1887 to present.

PsycArticles -- PsycARTICLES™ is a database of full-text articles from 53 psychology journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe & Huber.   From 1985 to present.

CQ Researcher -- Congressional Quarterly Researcher explores a single hot issue in the news in depth each week. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology. There are 44 reports produced each year including four expanded reports. All full-text.

Maine Newsstand -- Index to and full text coverage of four Maine newspapers. Database includes comprehensive coverage of the Bangor Daily News (12/3/92-present) and the Portland Press Herald (10/30/95-present). Selected business coverage of the Central Maine Morning Sentinel (8/12/93-8/27/97) and Maine Times (2/4/95-present). Updated regularly.

Article Linker:

The library has a resource to help database users locate full text articles. It is called ArticleLinker. What is it?

ArticleLinker provides access to the full-text of journal articles available in any of the library’s databases. If the complete article is not available in the database you are searching, ArticleLinker will tell you if full-text might be available in any of the other online resources.

When do you use it? Whenever you are searching in a database and the full text is not available in that database, look for the following:

  Click on the icon, then the link for your campus.

Many of the articles you will find will be full-text, this means you can print out the entire article from the database. Many articles give you only an abstract of the entire article, to order articles that are not full-text , you may request photocopies.

To order articles that are not full-text:

If there is no full text available by clicking the "Article Linker" button, select your campus, and them click on the link "Distance Learners Submit an Interlibrary Loan Request to Off-Campus Library Services" located at the bottom of the screen. This will take you to our Interlibrary Loan program called “Illiad”.

Once you have registered with Illiad, the form with the article request will be automatically filled in with the citation.  If you have a citation from another source besides the databases, go to www.learn.maine.edu/ocls and select   Article Request Form / ILLiad Document Delivery. You may fill in the form manually and click on submit. Articles are delivered electronically or mailed to your home address.
