Research paper on a social problem. Include a description of the social problem including how the social problem is evident in society, some of the causes, relationship to other social problems, efforts to resolve this problem, and proposed solutions. Include a section of your own opinion, as well.

To obtain background information on your topic, it is sometimes useful to look at an encyclopedia. The articles in the encyclopedia often give you ideas for terms to search with in the databases, definitions, statistics, maps, and general information. The bibliography, references, or works cited at the end of the article often gives clues for further reading. Some of the online encyclopedias also give selected website links to other sources on the internet.
Britannica Online -- select from the alphabetical list of databases. If you are accessing this resource via the internet off-campus, you will need your library barcode number to use as a login.
URSUS -- Using URSUS, you can identify books and government documents at every library in the University of Maine System as well as the Bangor Public Library, the Maine State Library, and the Maine Law and Legislative Library. You can "Request" items with your University library card and have them sent to the campus, University Center, or ITV site where you are taking your classes.
MaineCat -- If you cannot find an item in URSUS, you can search MaineCat the catalogue of other libraries in Maine and order material with your University library card. The drop down menus allow you to have MaineCat books sent to a campus, University Center, or ITV site for pickup.

To access databases from home, you will need to authenticate into the University of Maine System. You will be prompted by the box below once you select the database to search. Simply enter your only your last name and the 14 digit library barcode number on your student ID / library card. The number should start with 25022. . .
To find journal and magazine articles, newspaper articles, book reviews, and other current information, you will be using the Indexes and Databases. These databases cover varying date ranges and discipline areas. To find information about the coverage and date ranges of the database, click on the
in front of the database name.
Academic Search Premier -- covers the areas of study: social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts and literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies. Date coverage varies according to the publication. Provides full-text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications.
Business Source Premier -- Citations and full-text articles about local, national, and international business and industry.
CQ Researcher -- Congressional Quarterly Researcher explores a single hot issue in the news in depth each week. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology. There are 44 reports produced each year including four expanded reports. All full-text.
CJPI / Criminal Justice Periodical Index --Index to 175 U.S. and international journals in criminal justice. The publications indexed offer research support in law enforcement, corrections administration, drug enforcement, rehabilitation, family law, and industrial security. Full-text included for many articles.
Maine Newsstand -- Index to and full text coverage of four Maine newspapers. Database includes comprehensive coverage of the Bangor Daily News (12/3/92-present) and the Portland Press Herald (10/30/95-present). Selected business coverage of the Central Maine Morning Sentinel (8/12/93-8/27/97) and Maine Times (2/4/95-present). Updated regularly.
Newspapers (Proquest) -- Full text of more than 500 U.S. and international news sources. Includes The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, and the Times of London, plus hundreds of other news sources and news wires.
New York Times Historical -- The Historical New York Times (1851 to 4 years ago) offers searchable full text, with full page and article images (PDF). This resource includes articles, reviews, advertisements, comics, photos, maps and graphics, editorials, letters, and obituaries.
PsycARTICLES -- PsycARTICLES is a database of full-text articles from 53 psychology journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe & Huber. The database includes all material from the print journals with the exception of ads and editorial board lists. The database is updated daily.
PsycInfo -- Index to the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines, including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas. Coverage includes references and abstracts to over 1,300 journals in more than 20 languages, and to book chapters and books in the English language. The database includes information from empirical studies, case studies, surveys, bibliographies, literature reviews, discussion articles, conference reports and dissertations. Updated weekly.
Many of the articles in the above databases are full-text. This means that you can print out the entire article from the database.

Google News Archive Search -- News archive search provides an easy way to search and explore historical archives. Users can search for events, people, ideas and see how they have been described over time. In addition to searching for the most relevant articles for their query, users can get an historical overview of the results by browsing an automatically created timeline. Search results include both content that is accessible to all users and content that requires a fee. Articles related to a single story within a given time period are grouped together to allow users to see a broad perspective on the events.
